THE STORY ABOUT DISABLED PEOPLE IN BIG SPORT

Take a deep breath.
And another one — at once, without exhaling.
It is difficult. So difficult and uncomfortable,
that it is even a little bit funny

During spring 2015 after the request of the charitable foundation "Tochka Opory" we started to develop a complex multimedia project about the disabled people in big sport. During summer two photographers — Ksenia Diodorova and Yuri Molodkovets had the shooting of twelve Paralympic athletes in St.Petersburg. Following six autumn-winter months we had been developing the design concept and the realization of the project in three completely different media formats. In March 2016 the project was finished with the opening of the exhibition "In_Inbreathe" in The General Staff Building of Hermitage Museum.

Why this name
Any physical effort is made on the exhale. However, in order to achieve something in Paralympic Games you need to put several times more efforts into it, as the very first obstacle to overcome is simply leaving the house. We named this story "In_Inbreathe" since its participants have to make two inhales at a time instead of one. This name is difficult and uncomfortable to pronounce — so, it illustrates the core of the project even on phonetical level.

One concept
We decided to divide the structure of the narration into three essentially different parts
PART 1.
Story about people

In the first part it isn't specified that the participants of the project are the disabled people and sportsmen. The audience see regular people that drink tea, look into the mirror, walk the dog, hide from the rain, hug kids. Tiny little moments that everyone are able to understand and relate to.

"I suddenly caught myself thinking that for the last several months I have been waking up and going to sleep with the smile on my face. They say that when you fall asleep you should think of good and bad things that you have done during the day, then remove the bad and take good with you for the next day"
PART 2.
The story about people with disabilities

The second part is slow and static. Here the audience comes to the realization that the participants of the project portrayed before are actually people with disabilities.

"It is difficult to notice a disabled person in me, as I am not in a wheelchair or anything, I just am visually impaired. So, I have learnt to pretend to be just like everybody. I just listen closely to what is going on around and do the same"
PART 3.
Story about the disabled people – people who win

The audience gets weary and heavy feeling both on physical and emotional level by the time they reach this part. This is exactly the moment they realize that the participants of the project are athletes. They lift the bar, do butterfly swimming, do rowing, play basketball, and their walls are all covered with medals. The last part is full of dynamic and rhythm. And having the contrast with the second part which leaves the audience with lifted spirit.

"When I sit upon the horse for the first time, it was an amazing feeling as if you could walk and horse was walking from underneath. You don`t balance from side to side, you don`t need crutches, and you walk again, you have a certain manner of walking, you are able to run"

During the working process the concept was released in three completely different formats:

The exhibition in The General Staff Building of Hermitage Museum

19 March – 29 April 2016

The exhibition space was released in such a way as to organize three separate areas, in each of which we used separate visual languages of presenting the material. In the first one – video in combination with sound. In the second - double-sided labyrinth made of photos in light boxes. The third – mosaic composition, in which there are combined and actively working photo and video images the sizes of which coincide with each other. This way the distinct contrast between static and dynamic, loud and mute arises. Four story pieces that are transmitted on the screens are synchronized and form a complex logical sequence exploring the subject of movement and determination.

During the working process it was decided not to mark with the full names of the subjects their photos and words that each zone consists of and accompanied by. This decision allowed to form a consistent narration out of the separate statements and naturally add new meanings to visual sequence. Finally, at the finish line they regain their name individuality as here they are presented as champions and holders of many titles.

The exhibition in Galeria Shopping Mall as a part of Galeria Sport Week

30 May – 5 June 2016

By the Hermitage exhibition closing time, we received the proposition form Galeria Shopping Mall to continue the exhibition there as a part of Sport Week. Specially for that we made a new more compact installation, which was demonstrating in more compressed version of the project for all the mall visitors.
ONLINE FORMAT.
Multimedia version of the project in Internet

view website

Photo, video and audio as well as texts accumulated during three months of shooting are combined and presented in the form of a longread. It gives the site visitors the possibility to go step by step through the story of disabled people in the big sport gradually getting absorbed into the topic.
The audio of the first part of the long read "In_Inbreathe" is an improvisation of the contemporary composers recorded specially for the multimedia version of the project and exhibition. While watching the second part you can here on the background different type of sounds – splash of water, clink of the epees and ball banging etc Colliding they are turning into the noises that are not always pleasant to the ear, giving the feeling of discomfort and at the same time are puzzling as their connection with the visuals become evident only in the last part.
The feelings after experiencing vdoh-vdoh.ru are determined not only by the visuals and sound, but also by the route of the site itself. The navigation developed according with the overall concept also predetermine the behavior of the user, allowing to focus on the certain pages with the certain speed. Seeing that the pages can be viewed only in sequence. The second part ("hard" and "lengthy") is scrolling down slowly, while the third ("fast moving" and "sport-related") is rapidly clicked through to the right.
PRINTED FORMAT.
Limited art publication consisting of three parts

The book is presented in three volumes ("People" — "The disabled" — "Sportsmen") under the same cover. The parts have the same number of pages, but differ from each other in terms of the dynamic of narration. Here even more than in other formats of the project you can feel the sequence of the consistent story composed with the quotes of different subjects.

The book can be found in the General Stuff Building shop and all the money raised through the sales of the publication will be transferred to «Tochka Opory» charitable foundation that help the Paralympic athletes reach new champion titles.

+ Additional design assistance of the project
Along with the main formats we developed the complete design assistance of the project. It was crucial that despite the difference of the realeased forms, the story to be consistent for the residents of St. Petersburg. For the contact with the project in one medium would allow to think over the topics raised in others. The scrutiny and careful consideration were given to the tiniest details of the visual assistance of the project – invitations, design of the events in social networks, posters, layout of outdoor advertising.
